A word about prostate enlargement

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a common disease of men over the age of fifty. It may or may not cause symptoms which include:

	frequent voiding at night
	decreased force of stream
	hesitating before the urinary stream gets started
	an urgent feeling to void

Some patients can suffer from such a degree of blockage that may go into frank urinary retention (the total inability to urinate). Treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia is often successful and speedy following an initial medical examination and appropriate testing. Treatment alternatives such as the ones listed below are discussed and offered.

Watchful waiting
Medications to help shrink the prostate gland
Medications to help relax the urethra
Office Laser Therapy
Transurethral resection of the prostate gland
