     Infertility by definition is the inability for a couple to achieve a pregnancy within one year.  Approximately 20% of married couples have this problem.  In many cases it is treatable.

     After a thorough history, physical examination and preliminary laboratory investigation, many of the causes of infertility can be found.   These include:

	cigarette smoking
	drugs
	alcohol
	exposure to toxins
	environmental factors
	illness such as diabetes
	medications

     Treatment is based on the cause of the infertility and frequently involves close cooperation with the physician treating the female partner.
